Get ready for winter

There is no bad weather, only inappropriate clothes… So get ready and enjoy the winter in Sweden!!!

THE TOP 9 THINGS YOU NEED TO DRESS FOR WINTER IN SWEDEN

Your Guide to getting dressed for Swedish Winter Did you move to Sweden in Summer and are now facing your first Swedish winter?

Scandinavian winters are beautiful for the most part, as long as one knows how to dress. So here are my 9 tips to keep yourself warm!!!

CLOTHES:

1.WOOL

To combat the cold you need to dress in layers with the bottom layer being wool.

The Swedish name for woolen ski underwear (kids/ladies/men) that you would be searching for is ‘Ull underställ (barn/dam/herr)’.

2. FLEECE

The second layer, particularly if you are dressing for winter outdoor activities – and let’s be honest, who wants to be cooped up inside for half a year, is fleece.

Fleece jacket or sweater as an in-between layer.

3. WATER AND WIND RESISTANT JACKET

Your top layer should be a water and wind-resistant jacket or coat.

4. SKI- / OUTDOOR PANTS

Same as with the Jacket, these will keep you warm and dry until you have reached your destination. If you have kids or are planning winter outdoor activities, these are also a must.

FOOTWEAR

5.BOOTS

Forget about your beautiful, warm, leather winter boots. You will ruin them!

Instead, you need to wear water-resistant, warm outdoor boots when they go out during winter. They then have a second pair of nicer shoes with them that they put on once they have reached their destination.

6. SPIKES

So as to avoid endingg up in the emergency room with broken bones every winter, you need to put on spikes for your shoes. You can get them at pharmacies, shoe stores, or online.

ACCESSORIES:

7. REFLEXES

Winter in Sweden is dark! Therefore reflexes are an absolute MUST, especially when you are out and about in the suburbs or the countryside.

If you choose to buy those, you are supposed to fasten them in a way that they dangle to catch the light of an oncoming car while you move. However, they are so small that you would probably need to wear several to make a real difference.

8. FOR WARM FINGERS

Mittens will keep your fingers warmer than gloves since your fingers will warm each other.

For outdoor activities during winter, additional ‘Fika gloves’ can be nice.

*** Some outdoor stores also sellpocket warmers. These can be activated by twisting a little disc inside and stay warm for several hours. To recharge them just boil them for 10 minutes.

9. SOMETHING TO SIT ON

Last but not least, whether you are planning an outdoor adventure, or you are just braving taking your kids sledding or to the playground, something to sit on could be nice. There are very inexpensive styrofoam floor mats, or you could go the more traditional route and invest in a sheep or reindeer hide.

And yes, after all these you are ready for the winter in Sweden!!!
